| L-R: Seyi Makinde and Segun Ogunwuyi |
Segun Ogunwuyi, chief of staff to Seyi
Makinde, governor of Oyo, has resigned from his position after more than five
years on the job.
Although Ogunwuyi did not disclose the reason
for his resignation, TheCable understands that the move may not be unconnected
with his possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), following
an apparent alignment with Sharafadeen Alli, the party’s governorship candidate
in Oyo State.
Sources familiar with the development within
the governor’s camp relayed that speculation about Ogunwuyi’s resignation had
intensified in recent weeks following an internal disagreement over Makinde’s
choice of Bimbo Adekanmbi, the APM governorship candidate, as his preferred
successor.
Makinde had then pressured Ogunwuyi to tender his resignation, according to the grapevine.
However, neither the governor’s camp nor Ogunwuyi had publicly commented on the circumstances surrounding the resignation as of the time of filing this report.
‘IT’S BEEN AN HONOUR’
Ogunwuyi had conveyed his resignation in a letter addressed to Makinde on Monday, saying the decision takes immediate effect.
“I respectfully write to resign my
appointment as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State, with effect from
today, 12th October, 2026,” he stated.
“Serving the Government and the good people
of Oyo State has been a great honour. It has been deeply fulfilling to be part
of the exceptional team that has worked relentlessly to deliver the remarkable
achievements of this administration.”
Ogunwuyi said he remains immensely proud of
the collective achievements of the Makinde administration and its efforts
towards the progress and development of the state during his time in office.
“As I take this decision, I do so with profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve, with confidence in the continued progress of Oyo State,” he said.
“Please accept, Your Excellency, the
assurances of my highest esteem and unwavering loyalty to Oyo State and the
Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Makinde, presidential candidate of the Allied
Peoples Movement (APM), appointed Ogunwuyi in July 2021 to replace Bisi Ilaka,
who was relieved of his position at the time.
Before his appointment, Ogunwuyi served as
director-general of the Oyo State Investment and Public and Private Partnership
Agency (OYSIPA).
He was also a member of the Oyo state house
of assembly and represented Ogbomoso North/South and Oriire federal
constituency in the House of Representatives.
